Okay, so how many times do we ever sit down and seriously examine ourselves? And when we do, how come we rarely see the same things that everyone else sees? I don't know the answers, but I know it's a quandary I wish I could solve. Looking in the mirror is so much easier than looking in the heart.
Proverbs 4:23 admonishes us "above all else, guard your heart, for it is the wellspring of life."
Jesus tells us that the heart is deceitfully wicked above all things.
What's the deal with that?
We've heard all the cliches and verses: out of the abundance of the heart the mouth speaks ... where your treasures is there will your heart be also ... follow your heart ... to thine own self be true ... broken heart ...
God wants us to guard our hearts because they belong to Him. He loves us and He wants our hearts. When we give ourselves in relationships and when we put our desires on things that aren't in His plan, we give little pieces of our hearts away. God wants it ALL. And when we give it all to Him, He handles it so gently and lovingly. God will never break your heart. God will never set it aside when someone better comes along, because He made you and loves you just the way you are. God will never turn His back on your heart because you break His, He will only pull you closer and show you the depth of His love for you. That is what the heart is all about.
Trust in the Lord with all your heart ... Love the Lord your God with all your heart ... Turn your heart towards Him and He will show you His heart of compassion ... That is the HEART of the Matter!
